The White House has consistently insisted that American soldiers should not be directly involved in the war in Ukraine, but it continues to take steps that will inevitably lead to a full-scale open combat role by the US against Russia.
One of the latest moves to increase pressure on the Kremlin was revealed by Biden at a NATO summit in Madrid on June 29th that the US will establish permanent headquarters for the Fifth Army Corps in Poland, maintain an additional rotating brigade with thousands of soldiers in Romania, and increase other operations in the Baltic States.
The number of US troops in Europe, which is currently approaching 100,000, will also be increased. Biden was also pleased to learn that Turkey had been tricked into dropping its objection to Finland and Sweden joining NATO.
En route to the NATO summit aboard Air Force One, Bidens National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan advised, “By the end of the Summit, you will see a more robust, effective, credible, capable, and determined troop position to meet a more acute and heightened Russian threat.” Sullivan was probably reading from a prepared script, but the goal seemed more in it insist on escalating tensions with Moscow rather than trying to ease them and reach some sort of diplomatic settlement.
Nato General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg also made its contribution. In a stunning display of derriere kisses, he replied that the US forces’ new commitments demonstrated poise from Biden’s strong leadership. What Stoltenberg failed to mention was that Biden had been lying about the presence of US military personnel in Ukraine for some time. Back in March, he let the cat out of the bag when he sent troops from the 82ndnd Airborne Division in Poland that they would be going to Ukraine soon, noting: “You’ll see when you’re there, and some of you have been there, you’ll see –
“It was an admission that US forces are already in Ukraine, although the White House was quick to implement damage control and asserted that the President remains opposed to American soldiers being directly involved in the fighting. Biden also claimed that the US was working to “maintain the massacre [of Ukrainians] prevent them from continuing.”
Again, the language was hardly designed to make room for a possible settlement with Russia to negotiate an end to the fighting.
And now there is one New York Times Report titled “Commando Network is coordinating arms flow in Ukraine, officials say: A covert operation involving US special forces indicates the scale of the effort to support Ukraine’s still-outgunned military.”
The article describes a more active US role in Ukraine than the Biden administration was willing to publicly admit. Back in February, before intervening in Ukraine, the US reportedly withdrew its own 150 military instructors, many of whom were training Ukrainian soldiers on newly acquired American weapons. However, some paramilitary agents and special forces of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) clandestinely continued to serve in the country, directing most of the intelligence flow that the US shares with the Ukrainian armed forces.
In addition, special ops soldiers from Washington’s NATO allies have managed the movement of arms and equipment to Ukraine and provided specialized training. It has also been reported that British SAS commandos are actually keeping guards President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
That NYT citing American and other Western officials, states that the soldiers and CIA officers are not currently on the front lines with Ukrainian troops. Also loud TimesAlthough US and NATO member states have failed to recognize the presence of their paramilitary soldiers in operational roles in Ukraine, Russia and other intelligence agencies around the world are well aware.
That New York Times The report appears to be generally correct, although it omits some details, some of which I have heard from former colleagues in the intelligence community. Extensive open training was conducted at both the German army base in Grafenwoehr and the US air base in Ramstein to familiarize Ukrainians with the newly arriving weapons. Other NATO countries are also taking part in the training.
Meanwhile, cadres of special operations soldiers and intelligence personnel operating mainly in western Ukraine don’t wear uniforms, and many of them work under various made-up cover names, including sometimes loose affiliations with foreign embassies and NGOs. There is also a conventional CIA station, a National Security Agency group and a military attache’s office at the recently reopened US Embassy in Kyiv.
All of this means that Biden and other Western leaders have kept quiet about their active participation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. His possible slip aside, Biden won’t admit that American boots are already on the ground, but they are there, playing a vital role in both logistics and intelligence sharing. The potential downside for the president could materialize if some of these soldiers are killed in the mufti, or worse, captured and start talking about their role.
Retired US Air Force Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski, a former US Department of Defense analyst observes this The use of plausibly deniable ununiformed personnel “is entirely typical of the early stages of a protracted US-backed war and of the long-term political manipulation of the target country. This is the future envisioned for Ukraine by neocon “strategists” in DC and their British and European allies.
Instead of a negotiated conclusion with a new Ukrainian role as a neutral and productive country, independent of both Russian and US political influences, the US government and CIA see Ukraine as an expendable but useful satrap in their competition with the Russian Federation.”
Former CIA analyst Larry Johnson takes a harsh view of the activities while also commenting that the CIA has not won a semi-secret insurgency war in forty years. He notes that “Ukraine is a proxy; the West is trying to destroy Russia, it’s as simple as that. It would be one thing if Russia were the most vicious, repressive and authoritarian regime in the world. It’s nowhere even close. Even if the West keeps trying to portray Russia as such. The fact is, the West wants the resources that Russia has, and they want to control Russia. [But] Russia is not going to be controlled.”
In other words, Washington could search an endless war that will ensnare Russia and limit its options worldwide. The Biden administration has staked its reputation and possible political future on allowing Ukraine to survive without giving in to Russia’s territorial demands. It is a risky and even dangerous policy, both practically and politically.
Ukrainians’ persistence in their defense is largely a product of guarantees from the US and Western Europe that they will do whatever is necessary to support Zelensky and his regime, which is already seeking $750 billion in “reconstruction” aid. As Western military casualties surface, political support for the Ukraine war will begin to dwindle in Washington and elsewhere, and the upcoming US midterm elections in November will have consequences.
A final comment on Times piece is an answer to the question of why it was published at this point in time.
The mainstream media has been cheerleading for aggressive US support for Ukraine and Zelenskyy, but now they are beginning to back down from that position, as is them Washington Post and other media. Perhaps they are becoming convinced that the game plan being pushed by Washington and its European allies is unlikely to succeed at great cost to their respective economies.
Larry Johnson puts it this way:
“I think the purpose of this article coming out now is just to lay the groundwork for why we can’t or shouldn’t send US military personnel or even CIA personnel to Ukraine anymore because we continue to send US personnel…in Send Ukraine The move becomes too risky due to Russia’s success on the battlefield.”
One might also add that it is exceptionally dangerous. A misstep, or even a deliberate false flag coming from either side, could easily turn the war nuclear.
